Abstract
Nowadays, there are plenty of copyrighted works and resources that can help teachers in the classroom and enrich learning with special mention of OER (Open Educational Resources). These contents are not available without buying licences, so this is a limitation on using. However 2001 Copyright Directive provides the educational and research world with a list of exceptions, allowing under certain circumstances to use or reproduce parts of work. , however a more flexible approach is needed. In this work, we are examining the level of familiarization and awareness of teachers using copyrighted material, on the context of an NGDLE (Next Generation Digital learning Environment). According to a study commissioned by OHIM (Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market) on 2013, the majority of the EU citizens think that IP (Intellectual Property) plays a significant role in innovation and economic performance, however there is a clear contradiction and a gap between the subjective understanding that Europeans declare having of IP, and the objective knowledge which they actually have.
The methodology will be the exploration with surveys, face to face interviews and a simple evaluation test on the subject with the faculty as well as knowing first hand the main tools of creation and reuse of content by the team of trainers. It will allow us to draw conclusions regarding the knowledge and use of Copyright.
At the same time we have this barrier at the beginning, without knowledge and little or no awareness by educational workers, there is an increasing need to:
– Integrate, create, use e-learning platforms that facilitate the use by and for the educational community.
– Introduce collaborative tools that facilitate the group work of the students that allow monitoring by the educational tutor.
– Make content available to students that reinforces their knowledge inside and outside the classroom.
The LMSs achieve this target in part, but the arrival of the NGDLE gives us a new generation of digital learning environment. UP2U (Up to University) is an instance of the first European project that aims to implement this structure.
As such architecture, interconnection and communication protocols between the different applications must be kept in mind. All these features will be detailed in section, Features of UP2U NGDLE.
The main part and proposed solution of this paper is to increase the awareness of our educational environments about copyright. We propose for this the following roadmaps and guides of good practices of section, How to apply Copyright at OERs.
These action flows will help and encourage our content creators to have control over the creation and good use of the OERs that are the atomic element of any educational ecosystem at whatever architecture.
